I want my, I want my PIO
Never, never in a million years would I have imagined that I would be pining for a 1 and 1/2 inch needle in the ass. I'm just not that kinda girl.
However, I moved to the Progesterone suppositories yesterday and they are simply yucky. About 15 minutes after shoving the first one up the good ol' cooter, I noticed a startling ..... wetness. Scared to death, I rushed to the bathroom only to be treated to a small flood of what had to be the remains of the suppository all over the undies and the sweatpants of despair weight gain. Nasty doesn't floor me for long, but this was nasty.
Because it seemed to me that the progesterone was doing nobody any good on the outside of my body, I called the nice nurse to make sure of my technique. She advised me to lie down for 15 minutes after suppository administration, which I did, but to limited effectiveness. I called the nice nurse again and was told that I should expect some leakage. For the next nobody knows how long, apparently, it's going to be a drippy, progesterone marsh down there and nobody can do anything about it.
I gave up on having nice panties about ten years ago, so the progesterone suppositories don't bother me for that reason; however, they truly interfere with "operation spot-check," the impulse which continually causes me to make sure that the not-so-fresh-feeling is as a result of the progesterone rather than something more dire. Although I know that it's almost to be expected, I'm so worried about spotting that I've been rushing to the ladies about every 30 minutes, a habit which will no doubt raise some eyebrows at the DC office this week.
"Operation spot-check" may going to get worse because I've entered an information blackout period with today's third beta, my last. The beta, though, was good. After telling myself that I'd be happy with 800, it came back at 1385 with a doubling time of 30 hours.* Upon receiving this amazing news, I said goodbye to beta by breaking down and doing my happy dance, snoopy style, right there in my office. Can I tell you that I really love the fact that this office has an actual door?
I'll be living off this lovely beta for the three weeks between now and my next ultrasound. Let's hope that Paris Hilton and Tom Cruise keep up their distracting silliness in the meantime. On that note, did you hear that her engagement with the other Paris may be on the rocks? If I was him, I would be asking for that ring back.....pronto.
* I know that this might inspire some thoughts of twins, but the nice nurse took it upon herself to reiterate that we're probably just talking about one here, which is just fine with me.

I was anxiously awaiting news of this third beta and I am glad it turned out so well. Start the countdown to August 15th

Congrats! Congrats!!!! And yet MORE heartfelt congrats!!!
Bah... what the hell's a sticky cooter in light of such wonderful news. Although... you might want to try using a menstrual cup to keep all that hormonal goodness where its supposed to stay if it continues to be a hassle.

Great great news! Your betas are so nice and pretty. Sorry about the suppositories...I've never experienced the joy of those but I hear they're not fun. At least it's all for a good cause.

Do they have you taking the suppositories at night, morning, or both? My doctor had me take them at night. I'd put in a panty liner, go to bed, pop in the suppository, and hopefully it would mostly stay in for the night. I'd have some leakage in the morning that was gone by the time I finished my shower. I felt fresher during the day.
BTW, my DH and I had a joke if he wanted to get lucky that night, he'd have to make sure he mentioned something before I put something else up there!!!! LOL

CONGRATS on the 3rd beta! You are really going strong now!
I have to take the suppositories next week as I will be traveling, NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. Must try to do them at night as Heather mentioned...
P.S I have been reading your whole blog over the past week or so and I love it. Funny, informative and touching all at the same time.

First, congrats on the AMAZING beta numbers!
And about the progesterone--I did the suppositories for months, and didn't think too much of them (except for their amazing instant-underwear-ruining capabilities). But a few minutes ago I was talking to a friend doing a medicated IUI cycle, and she said she'd prefer the shots to the suppositories! So I guess you're not alone in that opinion...
The very very very very best of luck to you, my dear, especially in getting through the next three weeks!

Awesome beta, wow! Excellent news.

Congrats on beta #3! Do you have to do the suppositories? I don't see why you couldn't go back to the shots. I'm a shot gal myself. I much prefer a shot in the ass to those gross suppositories.
Posted by: Amanda | Jul 26, 2005 7:05:29 PM
Ah, the age old suppository vs. shot debate. I fall squarely on the suppository side myself, although I've never had the shots so perhaps they're not as scary as I imagine. I second (third?) the suppository at night suggestion, if you can - that's what I was doing this past cycle. I did have to wear a pantyliner during the day, but there definitely weren't any drippy feelings.
With that out of the way, congrats on the nice doubling! Those are great numbers!!! Happy dance, happy dance!!

Yay!!!
Posted by: MM | Jul 26, 2005 7:47:06 PM
Oh yes, do the suppositories at night, if you are just doing once daily. And immediately lay down. It does help and, perhaps too frankly, the general wetness increase will soon mask the suppository effect. At least it did for me.
Congrats on the beta!

Wanted to add in my congratulations. Things are going just swimmingly.
The three weeks to the u/s will be long, but I'm hoping you can find some way to distract yourself until then.
Very happy for you and your DH.

Progesterone supps suck the large bag ... but what GREAT beta numbers :) Dance the dance of joy carefully, would you please? :)
So glad for you, Suz!

Were the suppositories from Schrafts or from the compounding pharmacy near the RE's office? Because I've had lots of luck with the latter, but not with the former. Isn't it awful? And in this heat? A good friend calls it feeling "swampy" and however unpleasant that sounds, I think it fits.
Congrats on the great 3rd beta, by the way.
Good luck in DC. I'll try and find some good gossip for you and post it on my blog. Even if I have to make it up.
Take care.

Yay for getting the chance to do the Snoopy dance! I am so happy for you. Really, I mean that. Is it OK that I am insanely jealous though?
Posted by: Donna | Jul 26, 2005 8:43:19 PM
Awesome numbers. Glad to hear you aren't in dire straits.
I think Jude Law is your best bet these days. Did you hear Sienna was making time with Orlando Bloom?
Posted by: millie | Jul 26, 2005 8:57:43 PM
Panty liners are your friend. And I doubt 15 mins will be enough. At least it never was for me. When I was doing them twice a day, I'd lay down for at least 30 mins in the morning and I'd still leak for a few hours. It was nasty. But if you think that's gross, try them rectally. THAT was true nastiness.

Congrats on your pregnancy and your wonderful beta numbers!!! I am so happy for you and George, I feel like I know you (not in a Jerry Springer "I'm a stalker" sort of way) after reading your journey through IF hell.
I have finally read your blog, after reading about it on IVF Connections (took a while to get through the whole thing). I laughed, I cried, and I owe you a big fat "thank you." I'm going through my first IVF and the 2ww is killing me.....reading your blog gave a rather shitty day a nice ending. You also gave me hope that maybe this cycle worked, as I am not feeling anything 3dp3dt. So, thank you!
Best wishes to you and George and the bubkin/s you are carrying--here's to a healthy and happy 9 months!! I think it's just wonderful that such a deserving couple finally gets their dream realized!

WOW!!!! Congratulations!!!
Oh, and yeah, the supp's will leak like MAD. But rest assured, if you are lounging about for 15 mins after insertion, enough is getting where it needs to go. But get used to pantyliners or pads. It's some icky stuff. But good icky.

So pleased on that number Suz, and yes, my first thought was twins so thanks also for the footnote! hoping you can last through the information blackout

Congrats - what an excellent number! My clinic tried to foist the supps on me too - in the summer? No thanks, I'll stick to PIO.
So do you have any distractions planned?

Your beta is an alpha! Would you believe just a short while ago I was talking w a friend abt the Snoopy Happy Dance, how much of a pea is the world.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could just strap a mirror in the nether lands and be always informed?

Awesome news on the beta!
And I totally agree that prog. suppositories are disgusting. I'd do okay on the night ones since I slept through must of the leakage but the morning ones... ewww. NOthing like having that not-so-fresh-feeling all day long!
Heres to a really, quick 3 weeks!

That is great news re the beta, yay for you and may it sustain you well in the next phase of waiting.
As to the Swamp Gusset....maybe just lay off the undies altogether and let the air get to it!

Awesome beta! Congrats!
BTW -- I completely agree -- those suppositories are nasty stuff.

Whohoo!! Sounds like one healthy kid in there who ain't moving out for nine months.

Congrats on your wonderful betas!
So glad you brought up the supp issue. My clinic switches you from shots to supps at week 8 for 2 weeks. I would much rather do a shot once a day that deal with supps and related nastisness 2x a day.
Did you ask if you could switch back to shots and they said no? I was considering asking for the IVF I start in a few weeks (should I get that far again), but didn't want them to think I was a freak for preferring shots. Good to know I am not the only one!
Hang in there for the next 3 weeks!
Posted by: Betsy | Jul 27, 2005 11:51:45 AM
Note to self: buy cheap undies for the forthcoming nastiness. Question for you: why supps instead of shots? I am wondering why some places opt for one and not the other, or is it just your personal protocol in this case?
Posted by: B. Mare | Jul 27, 2005 1:09:48 PM
Here's another catch of the supps ~ they can make you bleed, bright red and lots of it. Gee, thanks for telling me that before I rushed off to the hospital at 8 weeks pg, on Christmas night. Since the area is so vascular, the supps can irritate your cervix, etc and cause bleeding that has nothing to do with baby.
Posted by: Kristen | Jul 27, 2005 1:21:40 PM
Excellent betas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah, yes the dripping. I guess I'm just used to it. Used suppositories for 7 IUIs plus a few natural cycles for baby #1, and 9 IUIs and now with this cycle because I was tired of shots. You never quite get used to it, but you probably will at least to the extent that it stops frightening you. I should really own stock in Always panty liners...
I would suggest renaming the sweat pants of weight gain "sloth pants". It's just a much more accurate description. I do much more slothing about in them than I do sweating!
: )

That's so funny, because I will have to start the PIO soon and I already long for my good ol' sloppy suppositories. I mean, come on -- what's a little wetness when the alternative is a NEEDLE IN THE BUTT? I know my husband wishes we could still do the supps, too, since he has to jab me, but we switched doctors and this is what they do.
So glad to hear your numbers are so good!
